Tuesday, two Republican members of the Wayne County Board of Canvassers refused to certify the election results. They were subsequently bullied into capitulation and reversed their decision after being called insults, accused of racism, and had their families bullied, forcing them to reverse and ultimately certify the results Wednesday. They have now rescinded that reversal and no longer certify the results.
First, the reason 2 members of the 4 member board did not certify is because 71% of the county’s precincts do not match voter rolls.
While I personally do not have access to this data to verify this information, if true, results should NOT be certified yet. An audit needs to be conducted and the final results certified once all questions are answered.
It was likely comments like this that forced them to reverse course and approve the results:
“The Trump stain, the stain of racism that you … have covered yourself in, is going to follow you throughout history,” Staebler, a poll challenger said, adding that the two would “forever be known in southeastern Michigan as two racists who did something so unprecedented that they disenfranchised hundreds of thousands of black voters in the city of Detroit.”
This is not subversion of the democratic process as the left might have you believe. This, quite literally, IS the democratic process. It is this process precisely that keeps faith in elections.
If this was brushed under the rug, people would begin to lose faith. Yet, that’s exactly what was being done.
Now, they have reversed the reversal. The two republican members of the board have rescinded their decision to certify.
What Does This Mean?
Wayne county is the largest county in Michigan. Republicans hope that if the results are not certified in Wayne county then the statewide vote cannot be certified which ultimately leaves the choice of electors in the hands of the Republican legislature.
In this situation, the electors would be chosen as Republican and thus flipping the state from blue to red.
I think this is a little far-fetched and extremely unlikely. The odds of finding all 71% of those votes are invalid is incredibly unlikely and I don’t believe this is a path to victory.
Instead, it’s far more likely that more man-hours will be used and those votes will be inspected and the majority will be counted eventually.
Then Why Fight This Fight?
Every vote counts and every vote should be legal and proper. If it’s not, it should be challenged and discard. Our system should be designed to ensure that the maximum number of people are capable of voting but also preserving the sanctity of those votes so illegal votes do not dilute the will of the voter.
Even if exactly zero election results are changed, this exercise is extremely important down to the last vote. Without trust in the integrity of the system, the system fails.
This is not a exercise that should be taken just when one party thinks they can win or flip votes.
Additionally, the bullying, rage, and mob mentality of the left can be overwhelming to low-level political people such as these county board members. Many of us have felt this in our day-to-day lives now imagine getting cold calls and comments harassing and threatening your family.
I fully understand the desire to protect one’s family. That’s why Republicans need to stand unified and defend anyone who is being attacked in order for the individual to have the courage to stand for what they believe to be true.
Bullying does not help keep a democratic process true. Bullying is antithesis to our Republic.
That’s my take.
