British citizens will soon be able to carry on their normal lives, but only if they carry the right papers.
It wasn’t long ago that the vision of government workers wandering around randomly asking people for their ‘papers’ invoked memories of the Nazi Socialist stain on Europe.
Now, according to a recent DailyMail article people will be able to go about their normal lives only if they have a “freedom pass.” Essentially, if you test negative for Covid twice in a week, you’ll be allowed to do all the activities you should be able to do anyhow.
Things such as walking your dog, exercising, or visit your significant other will be allowed, but only if you have your freedom pass visible or readily accessible.
While it is a great mental leap to go from “papers please” to “fascist dictator,” and a connection I’m not making, it can simultaneously be true that democratic western nations are becoming increasingly authoritarian in nature.
This reminds me of the juxtaposition of opposing views that somehow always describe authoritarianism.
- All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.
- Work will set you free.
- War is peace.
- Freedom is slavery.
- Ignorance is strength.
Now the UK can add – Controlling You is Freeing You.
Let’s hope this great idea doesn’t find it’s way to our shores.
